Discipline

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”-Jim Rohn

Discipline is the art of the master, a word not too many favor and some even cringe at it for one reason or another. It is also a word which some people have labeled me with, it doesn’t make me uncomfortable, though it does make me aware. I feel discipline is something which is lacking in a lot of households, with discipline, a lot of negative self-defeating habits can be broken. It doesn’t have to be super strict discipline, just reasonable enough where things get done and the mind does not interfere. Once the mind is tamed through discipline, focus is easier to attain. Focus is also the fruit of other activities such as yoga, meditation, art, etc. because having mental focus means having the ability to execute one’s goals and daily activities without the mental noise that makes things more difficult than they have to be.

In my personal experience, having discipline has allowed me to break some not so healthy habits and also create better ones. Exercise for example, is one of those things that you really need discipline for if you don’t have a background in engaging in physical fitness. It is really challenging not to make excuses to go work out because you are battling the mind, the mind wants to stay comfortable, doesn’t like change, but with good mental discipline those barriers break, and so do you, you break into a new you, like a butterfly out of its cocoon. Commitment is also part of the equation because without committing to a discipline you are more than likely to quit. The mistake that I see people do all the time is take things too fast in order to get quick results, the end result is going back to the old patterns of behavior and sometimes people even dig themselves deeper into the hole they attempted to dig out of. Be kind to yourself, take one step at a time, there is no rush to beauty/health, falling is natural, I do it all the time, but I always get back up, always. Just do it, it doesn’t have to be perfect so long as you are persistent. Believe in yourself and you will succeed, everything you need is within your reach.
