How to deal with anxiety

A lot of people deal with anxiety on a daily basis, how we cope with it differs widely. There are some who take to substances to help them deal with it, the problem with that is that it may turn into addiction-which can often be the case. However we now live in a society where there are many options that do not involve taking prescription drugs or other addictive substances.

I’ve found yoga has helped me deal with anxiety; the mere practice of breathing, which is encouraged during yoga, facilitates grounding. Through this practice I am reminded to breathe-especially when I get nervous-I always come back to my breath when I’m dealing with anxiety.

Meditation has also helped me with anxiety; I have established a daily practice of meditating every morning before heading out for the day. This practice helps bring me back to my center space, back to home. Meditation is a good way to create inner peace, when I close my eyes it is like going into a space where only I am allowed and with myself I feel at ease. This is where I am reminded to go when I start to feel discomfort.

Lastly, I remind myself that everything is ok and to trust in my creator, trust that I am being protected and believe in my power to protect myself. This helps me get out of my head and out of the many stories my ego can come up of everything that is wrong.  The truth is that reality is often better than what our mind tricks us into believing.

So remember, just breathe.
